Obituary: Frank Shuler (Pitt Ortho '02)

Obituary

Franklin David Christian Shuler, MD, PhD passed away on January 6, 2021, ending a four year battle with Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and cancer.  He was 53 years old. He was a great father, a great friend and an excellent surgeon. At the time of his passing, Dr. Shuler, was a Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Joan C Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University.

After earning his MD and PhD degrees at West Virginia University, Dr. Shuler graduated from his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. During his time at Pitt, he was a leader, a researcher and a competitor. After his residency he went on to do a fellowship in Orthopedic Traumatology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His research and leadership were again demonstrated during his fellowship.

Following his fellowship, Dr. Shuler began his career as an Orthopedic Traumatologist at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Shuler then accepted a position as an Orthopedic Traumatologist and Director of Orthopedic Research at West Virginia University. Four years later, Dr. Shuler went to Marshall University where his positions were numerous and included the following: Orthopedic Trauma, Vice Chairman of Orthopedic Research, Assistant Director of the Residency Program. Dr. Shuler was a “Top Doc” in Orthopedics for six consecutive years.

Dr. Shuler will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
