Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. MaCalus Hogan selected as the next David Silver Professor and Chair

We are excited to announce that Dr. MaCalus Hogan has been selected as the next David Silver Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC. After a national search, Dr. Hogan becomes just the 6th chair in our department’s 113-year history and succeeds Dr. Freddie Fu after his passing last year.

Dr. Hogan grew up in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, attended Xavier University for his undergraduate studies and then Howard University College of Medicine before completing his orthopaedic training at the University of Virginia. He then went on to Hospital Special Surgery for his fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery before being recruited to Pitt Ortho by Dr. Fu in 2013, where he has served as the Chief of the Foot and Ankle Division, Vice Chairman of Education and our Residency Program Director, among several other roles throughout the past 10 years. He also received his executive MBA at Pitt’s Katz School of Business.

We are endlessly appreciative for Dr. William Donaldson, who has guided Pitt Ortho as our interim chair for the past year.
