Dr. Dharmesh Vyas Named Medical Director at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Center

We are  pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Dharmesh Vyas as the Medical Director at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Center. Dr. Vyas’ received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois in 1995.  Following that he defended a Ph.D. in Physiology and Molecular Biology from the University of Missouri in 2000.  He completed a year of postdoctoral work in the same field at the University of Missouri before enrolling in Medical School at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  Upon graduation in 2005, he completed a five-year residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Chicago.  From 2010-2011 he participated in a sports medicine surgical fellowship under the direction of Dr Freddie Fu at UPMC.  He completed additional specialty training in sports medicine in Europe as a visiting fellow in Munich, Germany and Lyon, France.  He then started his current faculty position as an assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2011 and was promoted to Associate Professor in March, 2020.

Dr. Vyas maintains a busy clinical practice providing non-operative and operative treatment of sports and non-sports related injuries in pediatric and adult patients. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of knee and shoulder with expertise in hip arthroscopy. 

In 2012, Dharmesh served as team physician for the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins hockey club, and in 2013, he was promoted to head team physician and to the leadership role as Medical Director of the team.  In these roles, Dr. Vyas provides additional educational opportunities, allowing residents and fellows to shadow during NHL home games and participate in the care of professional athletes.   He is currently collaborating with the Pittsburgh Penguins to develop a sports performance center at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.  Dr. Vyas also serves as head team physician of the Penguins Elite Youth Hockey League at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.  Dr. Vyas’ research interests focus on clinical outcomes and treatment strategies for shoulder, knee, and hip derangement in orthopaedic patients.
