Albert Lin, MD, named Chief of Shoulder Service

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Albert Lin, MD as Chief of the Shoulder Service, Division of Sports Medicine, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.  Dr. Lin’s appointment was effective March 1, 2021.

Dr. Lin is a Pittsburgh native and attended Shady Side Academy.  He pursued his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude in 2001.  He remained at Harvard Medical School to earn his medical degree in 2005 and completed orthopaedic surgery residency training in 2010.  He is a 2011 graduate of the UPMC Sports Medicine Fellowship and would return to Harvard University to complete a shoulder and elbow fellowship in 2012.  During his shoulder fellowship, he spent time as a clinical fellow with Dr. Gilles Walch at the Centre Orthopaedic Santy in Lyon, France.  In 2012, we successfully recruited him to return to Pitt.  Dr. Lin specializes in the treatment of both sports specific shoulder injuries and complex shoulder conditions.  He has provided tremendous value to our practice and institution and is highly respected by his colleagues.

In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Lin is heavily involved in our residency and fellowship training programs.  He serves as the Assistant Program Director for the Sports Medicine Fellowship.  He supervises and mentors medical students, orthopaedic surgery residents and sports medicine fellows in the clinical setting as well as on clinical and basic science research projects.

Dr. Lin’s research interests focus on the clinical and basic science of shoulder injuries to include shoulder instability, rotator cuff pathology, complex reconstructive options of the shoulder, and shoulder arthroplasty.  He is involved in collaborative research studies with the Orthopaedic Robotics Laboratory, the Orthopaedic Biodynamics Laboratory, the Center for Cellular and Molecular Engineering as well as clinical outcomes research.

In addition to a busy academic and clinical practice, he serves in key leadership positions on the ACGME Clinical Competency Committee and Program Evaluation Committee, the AAOS Shoulder and Elbow Committee, and the ASES Education Committee.  A talented pianist and violinist, he has performed at New York's Carnegie Hall and with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He is active in the community and serves as the head orthopaedic team physician at Duquesne University and the head physician for three of our local high schools including Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School.

Dr. Albert Lin is an outstanding clinician, surgeon, teacher, mentor, and researcher.  We are very fortunate to have such an exemplary member of our faculty and I am pleased to announce his appointment as Chief of the Shoulder Service.

In addition, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Mark Rodosky for his excellent leadership as chief of the shoulder service.  Dr. Rodosky continues to provide clinical care and management of patients in his medical practice as well as participate in teaching, research, and service activities.
