Justin J. Hicks, MD, is an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Surgeon specializing in hip, knee, and shoulder surgery, with a particular focus on hip arthroscopy and preservation. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes-Jewish Consortium, consistently ranked among the top 3 orthopaedic residency programs in the nation. Dr. Hicks then pursued advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, which has been ranked as the #1 orthopaedic hospital in the U.S. for 15 consecutive years.
Dr. Hicks holds a medical degree from Wake Forest School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering with a biomechanics emphasis from the joint UNC Chapel Hill/NC State Biomedical Engineering Department, where he was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society.
Dedicated to advancing sports medicine and arthroscopy, Dr. Hicks focuses on treating sports-related injuries such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tears. His patient-centered approach emphasizes a combination of cutting-edge surgical techniques and non-surgical management strategies for conditions like ACL injuries, rotator cuff pathology, and joint preservation, all aimed at helping patients maintain active lifestyles.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hicks brings extensive research experience, including international work as a research assistant at the Oxford Orthopaedic Engineering Centre (OOEC) at Oxford University. His research focuses on both translational and clinical studies aimed at improving treatment outcomes in sports medicine and hip preservation. With over 45 manuscripts, book chapters, and presentations both nationally and internationally, Dr. Hicks has made significant contributions to the advancement of orthopaedic surgery, particularly in the areas of cartilage restoration, biologics, and hip arthroscopy.
Dr. Hicks is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society, where he has served on the board of directors. He also serves as a journal reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and for the journal of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is passionate about teaching and mentorship, playing an active role in training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr. Hicks has extensive experience in sports team coverage, having served as an assistant team physician for the Brooklyn Nets (NBA) and New York Liberty (WNBA). He has also been involved in the care of the St. Louis Blues (NHL), New York Giants (NFL), New York Rangers, New York Mets, and New York Knicks.
