UPMC Sports Medicine and PittOrtho had a strong presence at both the 2026 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Annual Meeting in Seattle and the Herodicus Meeting in Napa Valley, with faculty, fellows, residents, students, and alumni contributing to scientific sessions, presenting research, leading educational discussions, and earning prestigious national awards.
Several faculty members were invited to serve as presenters and moderators during AOSSM's educational programming.
Research was well represented in Seattle this year, through numerous podium and poster presentations covering topics including ACL reconstruction, shoulder instability, meniscus root repair, Achilles tendon ruptures, hip preservation, arthroplasty outcomes, patient-reported outcomes, and sports medicine policy.
Dr. James P. Bradley received the Robert E. Leach, MD Sports Medicine Leadership Award, AOSSM's highest honor (see further in our newsletter today for a highlight of Dr. Bradley’s award and a video link!)
Additional highlights included Dr. Justin Arner presenting alongside his fellow AOSSM/ESSKA Traveling Fellows about their international fellowship experience, and more than 30 current and former University of Pittsburgh trainees, faculty, and alumni gathering for a reunion happy-hour overlooking Seattle's Puget Sound and harbor.
Herodicus Society Meeting
Following AOSSM, Pitt faculty and alumni continued to demonstrate their leadership within the Herodicus Society during its annual meeting in Napa Valley, California.
Dr. James Bradley served as Chair of the Membership Committee, while Dr. Volker Musahl chaired the Nominating Committee. Dr. Albert Lin contributed as a member of the Awards Committee, and Pitt alumnus Dr. Lee Kaplan served as a Member-at-Large on the Executive Committee.
UPMC-PittOrtho representation was also felt in the presentations at this year’s meeting with Drs. Musahl and Lin serving as presenters and moderators alongside alumni including Drs. Robin West, Constance Chu, and Benjamin Ma.
The meeting also welcomed Dr. Craig Mauro as a newly elected Herodicus Society member for 2027.
