Senior Vice Chancellor Day 2022: Pitt Alum and Physician-Entrepreneur Shares Journey of Innovation

Stephen P. Canton, MD, MSc (PGY 1) aspires to become a surgeon scientist and innovator in the field of Orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Canton recently shared his success story during the inaugural Senior Vice Chancellor’s Day, an event designed to highlight the research and innovation occurring within the Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. Its mission reflects the multi-pronged approach of interdisciplinary learning and collaboration among the health sciences and how its six schools are shaping the next generation of researchers, clinicians and physicians at the intersection of economic opportunity, entrepreneurship and transformational innovation.

Dr. Canton shared his personal story surrounding his entrepreneurial endeavors. His interest and efforts have culminated with the launch of his early-stage startup, Sterile Vision, Inc., which offers a solution to organizing and tracking surgical instruments inside and outside the operating room via computer vision and machine learning. Canton credits his success in part to the interdisciplinary education and unconditional support he has received while at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Canton received a degree in Bioengineering (minor in Mechanical Engineering design) in 2013, MSc in Biomechanics from Louisiana State University, and MD/MSc from Pitt Med in 2021. He intends to continue his pursuits as a surgeon-scientist innovator, with clinical foci in orthopaedic trauma and critical care medicine.
