PittOrtho-UPMC Sports Medicine Ranks in Top 10 in US

A recent study examined the correlation between orthopedic team surgeons in major professional sports and their affiliation with the top 10 sports medicine fellowship programs (of which University of Pittsburgh/UPMC Medical Education Program is ranked #7). With a growing trend in post-residency fellowship training, particularly in sports medicine, the study focused on the implications of fellowship program choice for aspiring major professional sports team physicians.

By analyzing data from Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL), the research revealed that 61 of 124 (49.19%) team surgeons graduated from the top 10 sports medicine fellowship programs. University of Pittsburgh/UPMC Sports Medicine ranked number three in the most frequently attended of top 10 sports medicine fellowship programs.

More than 60 area pro, college, and high school sports teams turn to UPMC Sports Medicine for injury treatment and conditioning. It's clear that PittOrtho and UPMC's dedication to education and investment in our future practitioners is making plays both here in Pittsburgh and nationwide.
