Dr. Anthony Kontos was interviewed by the TribLive/WPXI regarding the amended safety rules issued by the US Soccer Federation. To reduce injury of concussion, youth players younger than 11 are no longer allowed to use their head to strike a soccer ball. The rule changes also limit players aged 11 to 13 to no more than 20 headers per week in practice, though players are allowed to use their head to strike a soccer ball during regular games.
Dr. Kontos is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and director of research at the UPMC Sports Concussion Program.
