The Cancer/Stem Cell Lab focuses research in osteosarcoma (OS) metastatic disease, as well as the metastatic potential in other sarcomas. The main focus is in establishing a vigorous, comprehensive sarcoma research program at the University of Pittsburgh with a long-term goal of translating new discoveries into clinical solutions for patients with metastatic sarcoma.
Osteosarcoma is the most common form of bone cancer, with a survival rate of 60 to 70 percent, and patients with metastatic disease have survival rates of only 15 to 20 percent. Most mortality from OS and other sarcomas is caused by metastatic disease, and there are currently no effective treatments for metastatic disease. Understanding the biology of sarcoma metastases could help develop therapies that may improve survival of these diseases.
Dr. Kurt R. Weiss is the director of the Cancer/Stem Cell Lab.
